Description

Card for my mom's birthday, made 11Mar08. Construction paper, Sharpie, craft glue, and some dried flowerlets from my front yard. About 3 hours tonight, not counting overnight drying for the flowers.

I admit it's a little more handmade-looking than I had envisioned. I didn't use a straightedge or a scalpel, nor lay out the pen marks in advance to make them even. Nevertheless, I needed to make something tonight that I could smile about.

Whatever these flowers are, here in Texas they grow in great carpets and turn stretches of ground purple and white. I picked a few high, strong ones when a sunny day finally came and coaxed them open. Then I pressed them in scrap paper between the pages of my electrician's textbook. The construction paper I just happened to have on hand, and chose colors that helped to set off the purple and white. Crayon didn't show up well on that brown so I used a fine red Sharpie instead to make the frame. Then I laid out the flowers in the arrangement I wanted, turned them over one by one, spread craft glue on their back sides with a toothpick and laid them in place right side up.

Next time, a ruler, boxknife, and tweezers are called for. Though it was fun to pick up those tiny glue-coated flowerlets with my big old human paws.

Regardless of the level of polish (which is pretty bloody high for a hand-made card), I'm sure your mother will really appreciate it. The flower arrangement is especially beautiful both in color and layout, and the overall color scheme is great. All those little imperfections make it all the more human and interesting.
